Right off the bat, we have an award where you’re probably not going to be able to get much value. The top two on the list, Billie Elish and Lizzo, seem like the only two that have a legitimate shot at winning the thing. That’s why you see everybody else in the fields with odds pumped up to no lower than 10 to 1.
If you really did want to take a stab at one of the long shots, Lil Nas X is probably the way to go. “Old Town Road” was the song you couldn’t avoid in 2020, and the fact that it came from out of nowhere makes for a nice story. But I think the Grammy voters would like to see more than just one bolt from the blue from Lil Nas X before they start awarding accolades.
Elish and Lizzo will be battling each other all night long, especially in these major categories. In terms of Best New Artist, it’s a typical case of the Grammys trying to shoehorn an artist into a category with a bit of a loophole. Lizzo is already on her third album, with her first released all the way back in 2013.
Not that any of that will matter with many Grammy voters. Still, I think that it will provide enough of a boost to Elish to get her home here. At odds-on, you won’t get too much back for your wager, but it’s better than losing it, which I think you will if you go in any other direction.

There seems to be a pretty good three-way battle going on at the top. I don’t think that much separates them, which should mean that “Truth Hurts” gets the edge in terms of value. You’re getting 6 to 1 for that and barely better than even money for “Old Town Road” and “Bad Guy.”
Grammy Betting Odds
The argument against Lizzo is that there have been some claims that her big hit was partially plagiarized. So far, nothing has really come of these allegations, but it could place a few seeds of doubt in the voters. Still, I just love the odds you’re getting on her here (and I swear I’m not swayed by the fact that I’m a lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan.
I admit I’m a bit of an “Old Town Road” skeptic, but it was the year’s most popular song, and sometimes that’s what it takes to win Record of the Year. As for “Bad Guy,” the concern is that Elish put out so many successful songs that it might be overshadowed, plus the fact that it’s a bit low-key for an awrd largely based on production.
If you’re an absolute long shot player, you should consider Grande and “7 Rings.” It feels a little bit less current than the big three here, but it was an extremely popular song in its own right. The 16 to 1 odds are certainly going to tempt some folks.

Again, there are Lizzo and Elish going at it at the top of the list. Remember that this is a songwriter’s award, which ostensibly means that production shouldn’t matter as much. That’s why you see the ballads by Swift and Capaldi sneaking into the mix.
I’m not sure that Swift does any damage here, even with her big name working for her. The album from which “Lover” sprung didn’t get as much Grammy love as her stuff usually gets. Capaldi’s song is a bit overwrought as well, which leads me to believe that it won’t get the job done.
My guess is that this is an area where Elish will get the nod because of the qualifications of the category. In addition, the plagiarism stuff probably hurts Lizzo here more than it did in the Record of the Year category. But I don’t feel super-confident on this one.
Perhaps that’s why it might be the category to go for a long shot. Although I think there were better songs on the album, the title track of Norman F***ing Rockwell is definitely in a singer-songwriter vein. I don’t think it wins ultimately, but it could be a place for Del Rey to be rewarded if she falls short in the Album category.

Right off the bat, I think that Bon Iver and Vampire Weekend are interesting at 20 to 1. What you might call “rock music” is noticeably absent in The Big Four categories, and even though these two don’t quite fit it either, they’re the closest to that genre. And although neither Vampire Weekend’s nor Bon Iver’s albums were their best, they could cause a ruckus in here.
From there, we move on to the top four in the odds. Del Rey probably had the best-reviewed of any album in the country this year. Could that be enough to put her over the edge?
Lizzo’s album is showing nice legs thanks to the success of “Good As Hell,” which helps her chances. I think Grande is probably the weakest of the top four candidates, not so much in terms of quality, but in terms of overall buzz. She wouldn’t be my choice here.
Which brings it back to Elish. The success of her album, and all the singles from it, in an industry where such phenomena are rare, will be hard to overlook. I think that she takes this one and ends up the night’s biggest winner.
